Saratoga’s Victoria Pool has us feeling like royalty all summer long.

If there’s one seat in town, besides a box at the track, that’ll have you feeling like royalty, it’s a lounge chair at the Victoria Pool. Built in 1935, supported by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and touting the title of “First Heated Pool in the US”, it’s one of our favorite places to frequent during a Saratoga summer. Located in the Spa State Park and surrounded Art Deco era architecture, the public pool is as picturesque as it is refreshing.

Not far from the family-friendly Peerless Pool, the demographic of the Victorian Pool is quite a bit older and significantly quieter (no waterslides here). You’ll find the occasional well-behaved child (kids are permitted) or sunbathing college student, but in general the crowd is of retirement age – aka it’s the perfect place to plop down with a good book and a vodka soda. Just don’t let that fool you into thinking this place is a snooze, the people watching here can be excessively entertaining – done discreetly behind those diva shades, of course.

There’s a bar at one end, where you can get your summer on in the form of a piña colada, strawberry daiquiri or whatever else floats your boat. We’re big fans of the pre-12pm Bloody Mary. And the restaurant serves up a casual lunch – nothing fancy – but the salads hit the spot.

The pool is open daily July 24 – September 17 from 10am-6pm, but people line up as early as 9:30am on a hot weekend day and chairs go fast – especially if they’re near an umbrella. You can bring your own, to set up along the perimeter, and small coolers are allowed.

While it’s not required, we’d recommend bringing your biggest hat and fanciest sunglasses. After a few cocktails, it’s virtually impossible to not feel like a starlet of the silver screen.
